The late comedian passed away this time last year from sudden cardiac arrhythmia.

His tragic death left hundreds of mourners across the UK.

The showbiz legend kicked off his career as an entertainer in the 80s while performing in pubs and clubs across the UK as Lily Savage.

From 1989 to 1992, Paul went on to perform annually as Lily at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, gaining increasing recognition for his act.

He then followed this with a show titled Lily Savage Live from the Hackney Empire, which proved to be a sell-out.

Once he had gained national success, Paul was asked to bring his act to mainstream TV.

The ITV documentary followed his rise to fame while playing Lily on Channel 4's morning show The Big Breakfast, and then hosting a reboot of hit BBC quiz show Blankety Blank.

The film also delved into the part Paul played in campaigning for gay rights during the AIDS crisis.

Archival footage was played from the drag character's early performances, accompanied by a voice over where Paul talked about her in third person.

Hearing his voice again brought many fans to tears, and some admitted that it was a struggle to watch the programme.

One person shared: "I'm not emotionally stable enough to watch the Paul O'Grady thing tonight. I don't think I ever will be to be honest. I grew up watching him."

Another agreed: "I can’t cope with this Lily Savage documentary."

A third added: "4 minutes into the Life and Death of Lily Savage and i’m already an emotional wreck."

Someone else was filled with mixed emotions, saying: "Laughing and shedding a tear. God, I miss Lily Savage. From the old days on a Thursday night at the Vauxhall Tavern, then a complete flea pit, to mainstream mania. Lily and Paul O'Grady. Very much missed. Both of them."
