Researchers have revealed five 'superfoods' to help your skin, hair and even weight loss.

Certain foods can improve stomach health and digestion. But there are also many other types of foods which can prevent hair loss and others which can bring a glow to your skin. Now scientists in South Korea have discovered kimchi which is less than £5 in high street supermarkets and costs very little to consume daily could stop weight gain.

Scientists analysed 115,726 people who ate up to three servings of the fermented vegetable dish daily could lower the risk of obesity in men. The study found eating the dish, which is made with radish, reduces waist sizes in both sexes.

Kimchi can come from as many as 100 different vegetable pickles which are hugely popular in South Korea where they are eaten as a side dish or a wrap and even as an accompaniment to another dish. Since the 16th century, kimchi has also included chillies, but this is not essential and ginger root, daikon radish, carrot, garlic and other herbs and spices.

Kimchi is often sliced and used in soups and or stirred through rice. A whole leaf of Kimchi can be used as a wrap for meat, fish or shellfish But it is usually sliced and eaten as as a pickled side dish.

Fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi have been fermented which encourages the growth of probiotics and supports health.

Experts from closer to home agreed with the findings of the research and said looking after the stomach was vital in looking after the gut. Catherine Nash a Gastroenterology Dietitian at Oxford Gastro Dietitians, said: “Your gut contains its own ecosystem with thousands of different types of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungi.

“There is a huge push on gut health at the moment and one of the ways of looking after the gut is by encouraging the gut ecosystem – or biome - to be as diverse as possible.

“Eating fermented foods can help increase diversity of the microbiota in your gut and if we nurture and look after our gut, it has the potential to create other positive effects in the body.”
