Beyond Paradise's Kris Marshall breaks silence on show's cancellation

Death in Paradise star Kris Marshall, has broken his silence on the cancellation of an ITV period drama, in which he starred, after just one series.

The 50-year-old actor was cast in ITV's Sandition, based on an unfinished novel by Jane Austen, after Kris had made his name in BBC's Death in Paradise. Unfortunately, Sandition didn't catch the imagination of viewers and it was cancelled after just one series, only for it to be resurrected in 2022 for a second series, despite poor viewing figures the first time around.

Kris has admitted the the plight of the ITV series was a first for him and speaking in a previous interview with the RadioTimes, the actor shared his thoughts on Sandition's TV journey. Kris said: "It is the first show I've been on that has been cancelled, then reinstated." He said that it was fans of the show that helped enable its return after the series proved to be popular when screened in the United States. He said about their intervention: "The fans did that after it took off in America, organising an incredible campaign to bring the show back."

ITV have now recommissioned the period drama for a further two more series and Kris has expressed his joy at having the chance to reprise his role as Tom Parker, who is an entrepreneur who has plans to make Sandition an upmarket seaside destination.

Meanwhile, fans of Kris can catch him in the second series of Death in Paradise spin-off, Beyond Paradise. Kris continues to play DI Humphrey Goodman and it follows his love story with Martha Lloyd (played by Sally Bretton) and their plans to expand their family. Kris has spoken about this role previously on The One Show, in which he explained the basis of the spin-off. He said: "We're basically following Humphrey and his girlfriend Martha's journey as they move in with the mother-in-law down in the South West. His new role is as the detective inspector of the local constabulary and it's lots of fun."

Speaking about the move from Death in Paradise to Beyond Paradise, Kris has previously said: "I think it has an amazing foundation as it is part of the Death in Paradise universe, a franchise with a very strong following that is loved by audiences all over the world. I’m extremely lucky that Humphrey was one of the show’s most popular characters. We had already had a head start from the fans, but I also hope we’ve brought on board our own fans.

"I hope people who haven’t watched Death in Paradise enjoy tuning in because Beyond Paradise is a completely unique and original show. It shares the same DNA, but it has its own identity. We’ve also got a really hot production team who know exactly what they’re doing and a brilliant writer and creator, Tony Jordan, who has created a completely unique show that has the South-West at its core. I think it really encompasses the charm, the music and wildness of the area. So, I think it is all those elements which make it so successful, and 'Thank God!' is what I say and 'Long may it last!'"
