Robbie Coltrane expressed his hope that his turn as Harry Potter character Hagrid would live on eternally - months before his shock death.

The iconic Scottish actor passed away in October 2022 after suffering multiple organ failure in hospital at the age of 72. While he had a decades-long career, he was known to millions around the world as kindly part-giant groundskeeper Hagrid in the hugely popular Harry Potter film franchise.

ITV has been re-playing the Harry Potter films intensely in recent weeks - with the dramatic two-part final instalment airing via the network over Easter Weekend. And many fans are still missing Robbie following his shock death less than two years ago.

Back in January 2022, less than 10 months before he passed, Robbie reflected on his role playing Hagrid in the HBO Max documentary Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. The one-off documentary brought members of the Potter film cast back together to celebrate 20 years since the release of the first film in the franchise.

While discussing his role, Robbie became emotional and declared: "It's the end of an era. Ten years of my life. My children have grown up during it." He then shared his hope that his performance would live on forever as generation after generation of viewers would share the film experience with their own children.

He said: “The legacy of the movies is that my children's generation will show them to their children... So you could be watching it in 50 year's time, easily... I'll not be here, sadly... but Hagrid will, yes."

Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry, praised Robbie for his work on the film series. He said: "Robbie was one of the funniest people I've met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on that set.

"I've especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid's hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he's passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man."

More recently, Miriam Margolyes - who played Professor Pomona Sprout in the film franchise - has angered Potter fans by slamming fans for continuing to fantasise about the series decades after it first appeared on screens. She despaired in an interview on New Zealand’s 1News earlier this month: "It was 25 years ago, and I think it’s for children.

“I do cameos [personalised video messages] and people say they are doing a Harry Potter-themed wedding, and I think, ‘Oh gosh what is their first night of fun going to be?’ I can’t even think about it. Harry Potter is wonderful, I’m very grateful to it. It’s over. That’s what I think.”

Harry Potter fans should brace themselves to return to the world of Hogwarts and wizardry as Warner Brothers intends to reinvent the film series as a TV series. The project was first announced in January 2021 - but fans will need to wait until 2026 for the show to start streaming via HBO Max.
