A former security expert who worked closely with ex-president Donald Trump has said he "hasn't got the brains" to run a dictatorship.

John Bolton, 75, claimed the 45th POTUS did not have what it takes to be president nor had the intelligence to form a permanent grasp on power. Trump was slammed as a "property developer" who had the mirror image of dictators as Bolton laid into the ex-president in a recent interview.

Bolton served as the former president's national security adviser from April 2018 to September 2019 but has since criticised Trump and his presidency on numerous occasions. He has since claimed Trump is "unfit to be president" and a second term for the 77-year-old would be "worse" than his first.

Speaking to LeFigaro, Bolton said: "Donald Trump doesn't have a political philosophy, he doesn't get involved in policy analysis or decision-making in the way we normally use those terms. For him, everything is episodic, anecdotal, transactional. And everything is contingent on the question of how this will benefit Donald Trump , politically or personally." He later claimed Trump did not have the smarts to be a dictator and merely mirrors the despots he praises around the world.

The former security chief suggested Trump was simply not smart enough to administer the changes needed to become a dictator. Bolton's comments come as Trump warned he would be dictator for a day if he were re-elected. Asked in an interview with Sean Hannity whether he would promise to "never abuse power as retribution against anybody", Trump replied: "Except for one day." He was then asked: "You're not going to be a dictator, are you?".

Trump replied: "No, no, no, other than day one. We’re closing the border and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator." But Bolton maintains Trump is not capable of doing so despite having heaped praise on the likes of North Korea's Kim Jong-Un and China's Xi Jingping. "Trump is unfit to be president. If his first four years were bad, a second four will be worse." Bolton warned.
