Football bosses should not have been surprised by the backlash over plans to scrap FA Cup replays.

The proposed changes, rushed through without proper consultation, go against the spirit of the competition. For fans, the success of the Cup rests on the fact the teams vying for the trophy come from all levels of the game but all are treated equally.

But the decision to axe replays has been taken at the say-so of the wealthy few, depriving smaller clubs of the chance of a massive occasion and a welcome payday. In the wake of the Mirror’s campaign to save the magic of the Cup, the FA is now holding a meeting to review its proposal.

Our call has been backed by fans, former players and clubs across the country. It is not too late for the FA to change its mind. The governing body should listen to the people who are the lifeblood of the sport and whose clubs are the lynchpins of so many communities. Football should be for everyone, not just the elite.

Manchester's Co-op Live was supposed to be the jewel in the crown of the city’s entertainment scene. Instead, the 23,500-seat arena is in danger of becoming a national embarrassment.

The opening gigs by comedian Peter Kay were rescheduled, only to be postponed again. Now shows by US artists A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Olivia Rodrigo have been called off at short notice. Thousands of fans have been left disappointed and out of pocket. Safety has to come first but there is no excuse for organisers opening their doors before the venue is ready and then cancelling events at just a few minutes’ notice.
