REGULAR presenters disappeared from BBC Breakfast this morning in a scheduling shake up due to a special event.

Guest host Sarah Campbell, who is usually the Beeb's Royal Correspondent, has been stepping in for Sally Nugent over the past few days.

Today was no different - but this time Sarah was the only person in the BBC Breakfast studio as co-star Jon Kay headed out to Portsmouth for a segment commemorating D-Day.

He took to social media to let viewers know the reason behind his absence from the red sofa, saying: "We’re broadcasting BBC Breakfast live from sunny Southsea Common which today hosts the national commemoration for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

"This very special event hosted by Dame Helen Mirren is on BBC One later this morning."

Weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood also made an appearance from Portsmouth, leaving Sarah alone on the red sofa.

The guest host stepped up to the occasion, giving audiences at home an update on the morning news.

She then went on to interview two guests - the Secretary State for Energy Security Claire Coutinho, and Reverend Richard Coles.

Viewers have been left alarmed by Sally's disappearance from the morning programme over the past three days.

While Sarah has done a terrific job of filling her shoes, several have started to speculate that the original show host might be quitting her job.

One person shared: "Good use of the BBC breakfast sofa! Will miss Sally Nugent on breakfast."

Another complained: "Most excellent but does this disrupt my early morning viewing when I expect to see you and Sally Nugent on the sofa."
