Keeping lint out of your laundry has never been easier.

When it comes to washing and drying clothes, keeping your appliances clean can be a nightmare. You have to regularly wipe down your washing machine so that it doesn't start growing mould, and your tumble dryer can soon become a fire hazard if you don't deal with the build-up of lint and dust that comes from drying your clothes.

But one cleaning fan has said you don't need to break the bank or spend more time than necessary cleaning your washer and dryer, as there's a simple hack you can use to keep them both lint-free in seconds. What's more, the trick could even be free to do if you already use one laundry product in your wash.

In a post on Reddit, one person said they take a used dryer sheet and use it to wipe down both their washing machine and their tumble dryer, as it picks up excess lint and dust "easily and quickly". And because they already buy dryer sheets for their laundry and only wipe their appliances down with one they've already used in a wash, it doesn't cost them a thing.

They wrote: "I found the easiest way to keep my washer and dryer free of dust and lint is to use a used dryer sheet to wipe them down. Takes only a minute, picks it all up easily and quickly, and shows any dried-up spots of laundry soap that may have dripped which easily rubs off. Plus I already have the used dryer sheet as I take clothes out of the dryer."

If you need to buy some dryer sheets, you can pick them up in most supermarkets with your weekly shop, or you can grab some on Amazon. A pack of 240 sheets from Amazon will cost you £19.52, meaning that each sheet costs just 8p. You can also get a three-pack of Lenor tumble dryer sheets with 34 sheets in each box for £9, giving you 102 sheets for around 9p each.

The person shared the hack on the Cleaning Tips forum on Reddit, where others were also quick to share their favourite cleaning hacks, including several that could help you stay on track if you find cleaning difficult or are easily distracted. One person said: "If you have a huge pile of laundry to fold that is overwhelming you, fold the towels first. They are the bulkiest items and the pile will get smaller very quickly. It helps with the mental aspect of reducing the overwhelmingness."

Another shared a similar tip for cleaning washing machines, as they stated: "When I switch from washer to dryer, I inevitably drop a damp sock. I just can't bring myself to let it continue on its journey to the dryer, so I use it to wipe the lint dust off the washer/dryer etc, and then it gets rewashed with the next load."
