An Elvis impersonator was a speed King after being caught driving too fast by the police.

Spencer Dale already had nine penalty points when he was clocked at 79mph in a 70mph zone. But he avoided a potential driving ban after a court agreed he would suffer “exceptional hardship” if he could not perform across the country as The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Magistrates in Harrogate, North Yorks, heard Dale, 52, was speeding in a Vauxhall Astra Envoy DTI on the A64 near York on August 18 last year.

After entering a guilty plea he faced another three points and a possible six-month driving ban. But he told the bench he ran a business impersonating the music icon and he and his family would suffer if he lost his licence.

And magistrates agreed to only apply three more penalty points on his licence. But they warned him he would not get a second reprieve.

Dale, from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, was fined £83 and ordered to pay a £33 statutory surcharge and £90 in prosecution costs as part of his sentence.
