England vs Iceland preview

A much-changed England starting XI brushed aside Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James' Park on Monday, securing a dominant 3-0 victory courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane.

And it should be an equally straightforward evening as FIFA's 72nd-ranked side Iceland visit Wembley on Friday.

The Three Lions squad have one final chance to impress manager Gareth Southgate before they head over to Germany and prepare for their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on June 16.

And there's added jeopardy of Southgate needing to trim his 33-man provisional squad to just 26 on Saturday with Tottenham playmaker James Maddison already axed.

England are likely to have several of their top talents back in the ranks with Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Kobbie Mainoo and Kyle Walker in contention.

Southgate is also expecting to have Bukayo Saka and John Stones back after their precautionary rest periods.

Iceland narrowly missed out on qualification to Euro 2024 when losing 2-1 to Ukraine in the playoff final, despite taking the lead after 30 minutes.

But they are in reasonable form having beaten Guatemala, Honduras and Israel in three of their last four outings -- although highly-rated Genoa striker Albert Gudmundsson will not be involved.

England vs Iceland betting tips

Slow start

There isn't a huge amount of value around given how easily England are expected to dispatch their opponents at Wembley on Friday.

But another sluggish start doesn't look beyond the realms of possibility.

England took an hour to burst into life against Bosnia before a flurry of goals earlier this week with a new-look side that hadn't been on England duty since March.

And with plenty of changes expected again on Friday, it could take a little while for the machine to kick-start against a side who'll no doubt dig in and sit deep.

Cole delivers

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer impressed on Monday, and he's likely to get the nod again again against Iceland as Gareth Southgate looks to accommodate him in the starting XI.

It's been said a million times, but Palmer has been a revelation at Stamford Bridge having scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.

He fired in a penalty with Harry Kane off the field on Monday, and will likely be on penalty duties with Brentford's Ivan Toney set to lead the line in Kane's absence.

Yellows?

Given the friendly nature of this contest, I think there's a good chance that very few cards will be dished out at Wembley.

The England players, aside from wanting to win, will be focused on getting to Germany in one piece and should avoid any risky challenges.

Iceland meanwhile haven't exactly been blood and thunder in their last four matches, with two of their last four seeing them avoid the referee's notebook altogether.
