Restaurant sparks fury with new rules banning women under 30 to avoid 'drama'

A restaurant has been accused of discrimination after banning women under the age of 30 and men under the age of 35, in an attempt to avoid "drama".

The owner of Bliss, located in St Louis, Missouri, hopes the unusual restriction will create a "pure utopia" for his more mature clientele. But many are furious by the unusual rules.

The owner of the West African and Caribbean cuisine restaurant, Marvin Pate, has promised a "sophisticated environment" and a "unique ambience". Assistant Manager Erica Rhodes explained: "It's just something for the older people to come do and have a happy hour, come get some good food and not have to worry about some of the young folks that bring some of that drama."

Mr Pate acknowledged the backlash, stating: "Of course, we have been getting a little backlash," but added, "But that's OK because we're sticking to our code. It represents pure happiness and pure utopia. It's a home away from home. You can come here and feel like you're actually on a resort."

Although some have welcomed the idea, it's infuriated many, especially the different treatment of men and women. Jonathan Bowen quipped: "So Leonardo DiCaprio could go but his girlfriend could not."

Alison L Smith questioned the gender disparity, demanding: "I don't disagree with their choice, but why 30 for women and 35 for men? That's the only thing that bothers me. Why couldn't it be just one set age for both genders?"

Some argued if the restaurant was banning older people it would be treated differently. Elizabeth Bizios pointed out on Facebook: "If it was a place banning people 55+ there'd be outrage."

Andrew Bromund, a disgruntled customer, wrote: "Since my customers don't read the menu I suggested a sign at the door that says you must be literate to come in here and I got told that would be discrimination." He added: "If this can fly, my idea should be able to as well."

Becky Dowling, who has worked in the industry for 20 years, defended the restaurant's decision. She said: "Trust me when I say I'm from this area and it's been implemented for a reason." She added: "Smart on them to do this."

However, some believe the restaurant may have misjudged its clientele. Despite the backlash, Pate remains unfazed and looks forward to welcoming those too young to dine. He said: "Those younger ones, you can come patronise the business once you turn 30 or 35, because we're gonna be here for a while."
