King Charles has shared a health update amid his battle with cancer, telling one D-Day veteran in Normandy that he is "doing well."

Charles and Queen Camilla visited a marquee where veterans stopped for tea and cake. On one table, the King sat beside Ronald Hendrey, 98, of Clacton-on-Sea, who asked about his health. Mr Hendrey said: “He was very nice, he listened to what I was saying and took it in. I asked him how he was doing, he told me he is doing well.”

The King and Queen are among world leaders gathering in France this morning to celebrate 80 years since the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Both Charles and Camilla appeared to have an emotional reaction as the memories of D-Day veterans were read out, with the Queen seen wiping her eyes. It's the King's first overseas visit since his cancer diagnosis was made public.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US president Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are also at the UK commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer.

The site first opened its doors in 2021 and pays tribute to 22,442 service personnel under British command who died on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. Today will mark the first major commemorative event hosted at the memorial, with King Charles and Queen Camilla officially opening the Winston Churchill Centre for Education and Learning following the commemorations.

The Prince of Wales will be at the Canadian commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer. Yesterday, Prince William said his wife the Princess of Wales would have "loved" to have joined in with the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day as she continues to recover following her cancer diagnosis. Speaking to a veteran at a major event in Portsmouth on Wednesday, he appeared to say "she is" when asked if Kate was "getting any better". The prince added: "She'd love to be here today."

The King paid tribute to D-Day veterans at the commemorative event in Portsmouth for the 80th anniversary yesterday. Addressing the crowd, Charles said: “The stories of courage, resilience and solidarity we have heard today and throughout our lives cannot fail to move us, to inspire us and to remind us of what we owe to that great wartime generation.”

This blog has now ended.

'Each of us had a job to do and if you're doing it, you're not concentrating on anything else'

Phil Sweet, 99, who was in the Royal Navy, was part of the initial wave that landed at the village of La Riviere as part of the Gold Beach landings when he was 19.

He said: "I was on a tank landing craft, we had two tanks mounted on the tank deck to fire on the beach ahead of the first troops landing, but with the bad weather, it didn't work out and we arrived a little bit later, so we hit the beach and offloaded our tanks close to La Riviere.

"We lost our drag anchor going in, so we went in on a very high tide and got stuck on the beach until the 19th and acted as a Prisoner of War camp before the prisoners were shipped out."

Mr Sweet ended up becoming unwell with acute peritonitis and was in a tented hospital in Bayeux "with all the Canadian wounded".

He said: "We didn't really know what we were in for. I joined in the April, 16 weeks after I joined I was a naval officer and still hadn't been on board a ship. I was drafted to a landing craft and did my training.

"Each of us had a job to do and if you're doing it, you're not concentrating on anything else. I suppose I was afraid as much as anyone else would have been, but there was a huge sense of camaraderie."

John Davies, who was 17 when he first went to sea, said he was "absolutely honoured" to be at the 80th memorial service and became tearful as he remembered the horrors he witnessed during his service.

"Especially younger people now, unless they realise exactly what was given for them, it will keep happening."

Prince Harry given green light to appeal High Court ruling on UK security

The Duke of Sussex has been given the green light to appeal against a High Court ruling dismissing his challenge over a decision to change the level of his personal security when he visits the UK by a Court of Appeal judge.

High Court judge Sir Peter Lane issued the ruling in February. The senior legal official has ruled in against Prince Harry.

The Duke of Sussex was left fuming when he was told he no longer qualified for protection after leaving for America with his wife in 2020 by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec), governed by the Home Office. It set in motion a number of court appearances and in July 2022 the Duke won the right to partially challenge the decision.

The First Lady gave Camilla's hand a light squeeze before quickly dropping it. The pair then stood side-by-side in front of the memorial as they paid their respects.

33-year-old groom-to-be Hugh Grosvenor is the richest person under the age of 40 in the UK, and the 14th wealthiest person overall, according to The Sunday Times Rich List. The property tycoon is said to be worth an immense £10bn.

Hugh's connection to the royals stems back to his late father, Gerald Grosvenor. The 7th Duke of Westminster was a close friend and confidante of King Charles; so much so that the then-Prince Charles is one of Hugh's godfathers. In fact, the bond between the two men was so strong that Charles later asked Gerald to act as a mentor for a young Prince William.

Paris was brought to a standstill as President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill arrived in Normandy, France, for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

A staggering 250 miles of traffic jams were caused by the presidential convoy, leading to the closure of the western side of Paris's ring road during Thursday morning's rush hour. Sections of three motorways, including the A13, were also shut down to allow President Biden and his multiple-car entourage to reach the D-Day commemorations.

"This caused 250 miles of traffic jams," said a traffic control official in Paris. "There were plenty of angry motorists about."

Billionaire Duke stuck in middle of Prince Harry's bitter feud with Prince William

The Duke of Westminster, who marries his long-term love Olivia Henson at Chester Cathedral on Friday, has found himself in the position of being stuck between feuding brothers Prince William and Prince Harry.

That's because his brother Prince William is also invited and with the pair embroiled in a bitter feud, it appears that one party had to concede they would not attend not to overshadow the day. It comes as the groom, known as Hughie, who is the richest man in Britain under 40, finds himself in the unusual position of being close to both warring brothers.

He continued: "Joe Mines, clearing mines. One of our fellows trod on one and blew his leg off. The whole leg went. War is brutal. I was 19 when I landed, but I was still a boy. I don’t care what people say, I wasn’t a man, I was a boy. And I didn’t have any idea of war and killing.

"This is the last and only opportunity for me...I want to pay my respects to those who didn’t make it. May they rest in peace."
