Sam Smith was just trying to enjoy the night until they couldn't.
Sam walked the Met Gala carpet alongside boyfriend and fashion designer Christian Cowan on Monday. The two coordinated their outfits with black and white custom suits by Christian. They used a stemmed rose to hold the suits together. Sam wore the black suit with a tulle skirt and a light-blue tie, while Cowan wore a white suit with matching trousers and a gold tie. The two have been dating since 2023.
After an evening full of fashion and a surprise performance from Ariana Grande, celebrities attended after parties around New York City, but it seemed like Sam had trouble getting in.

Two huge pop stars will perform smash hit at Brit Awards next monthA source told Page Six that Sam turned away from the Macallan party at the Mark Hotel. They were told: "You’re not on the list, you can’t come in." This could have came to a shock for Sam since they are a very well known singer. The source also said that Sam tried three times, but no luck. They said: "They gave them a flat out ‘no.’ They tried three times."
Despite not being on the list or getting recognized, the source said that Sam handled it well but walked away "surprised." Regardless of rejection, Sam was seen at Dua Lipa's party at Rob Toma’s Hearsay in the Meatpacking District and other celebrations.
A source said that Sam and Christian "kept the dance floor smoking hot." Getting rejected happens more than some might think. Last year, Kylie Jenner was turned away from Richie Akiva, Doja Cat and Diddy’s party at the Box due to reaching its capacity.
The news of Sam comes after they and Christian made their relationship Met Gala official. Christian told Vogue's red carpet co-hosts Ashley Graham and Gwendoline Christie that their suits referenced the 1940s with their Met Gala look.
He said: "Because it’s supposed to be about back in time, we wanted to reference the 1940s, Oscar Wilde — a queer icon. We’re both queer and British so an English rose, I thought was perfect." He continued: "And early on in our days, I gave Sam a metal plated rose."
Sam said that they "always feel beautiful" when wearing Christian's clothing. Sam said: "I couldn’t have dreamed of a better companion for the occasion. I think of the Gala as fashion Christmas—just as fabulous and just as serious, given the incredible work done at the Met."
