Manchester United have a big game on the horizon against Arsenal this weekend, yet the build-up hasn’t been filled by the usual excitement.

United could end the Gunners’ hopes of winning the Premier League title when they host them at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. But the 4-0 thrashing by Crystal Palace on Monday is still fresh in the memory and United have won just two of their last 10 in the league.

That is why they sit eighth in the Premier League table and major changes are being plotted for the summer. Erik ten Hag is very likely to lose his job and many of the current squad could also be sent on their way by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his new-look United hierarchy, no matter what happens in the FA Cup final later this month.

It’s a pretty bleak outlook and the latest news has a similar flavour: doom and gloom. Allow Mirror Football to guide you through the headlines.

Dressing room falling apart

The negativity isn’t just coming from the outside – it is also being felt inside the United dressing room, unsurprisingly. Ten Hag has lost the confidence of his players and there is a feeling they might not win another game this season.

A United insider has told Mirror Football that the mood among the squad is “miserable”, with many of the players convinced Ten Hag will be on his way this summer after such a dismal season.

United have already suffered 13 defeats – the most they have ever racked up since the Premier League was formed in 1992 – and more could well be incoming, given the form of Arsenal. After the Gunners comes Newcastle, who have zoomed past them in the table, and Brighton, who have won the last four meetings between the teams.

Souness issues Ratcliffe warning

Graeme Souness has relayed a story about when he met Sir Jim Ratcliffe which suggests the United project might take longer than expected by some.

“Jim Ratcliffe is a year older than me, I think he is 71 now. This [United] isn’t a quick fix. I had a meeting with him, he asked to see me about buying a football club. I think he was about 66 at the time,” Souness said on Up Front with Simon Jordan.

“I can vividly remember him saying: ‘I haven’t got time to buy a club and develop it’. He was talking about Fulham and he had a season ticket at Chelsea. I said: ‘Chelsea, maybe buy that?’ He did say: 'Fulham, it’s a project, it’s not going to happen overnight'. He said: ‘I don’t have that amount of time’.”

Dyche put forward as Ten Hag replacement

Sean Dyche should be considered by United to replace Ten Hag this summer, according to Jeff Stelling. Dyche has done a fine job steering Everton clear of relegation in the Premier League, despite two points deductions and might provide a safe pair of hands.

The former Soccer Saturday presenter said on the Joy of Football podcast : “I’ve said Sean Dyche should be considered by Manchester United. Gareth Southgate is being considered by Manchester United, we believe. And Sean maybe as well, because it is a fresh point of view and they need some freshness, they need a different point of view, a different sense of purpose.

“And maybe if you were sitting around a table with all those new influences at Manchester United, you could make the point and make the case that actually what you do need is something a bit closer to home. It was tough for David Moyes because it’s straight on the back of Fergie. It’s a terribly difficult job to follow.”
