WHATSAPP is sticking to a major change coming to all users despite complaints of it being "ugly".

The popular messaging app started rolling out a new green design weeks ago but many hoped the company would do a u-turn.

WhatsApp's Android version has always had green icons but on iPhone, it has traditionally had blue ones until now.

"The new WhatsApp interface is not a vibe at all, from blue to green. How? Why?" one person wrote on X.

"WhatsApp's new update is probably the ugliest to date... Even the shade of green is ugly as f**k," another commented.

Instead, the Meta-owned service is sticking to its guns and will make a huge design shake-up for everyone.

And there's no option to change it back.

The firm says it is making the change so the app feels "more fresh and modern without disrupting its core functionality".

Over 35 colours were tested before bosses settled on the current green look.

"We’re introducing a new, consistent green palette within the app for a unified experience," explained Idit Yaniv, Head of WhatsApp Design.

"We also heard that people wanted a darker dark mode.

"We focused on higher contrast and deeper tones to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. We’re making it one shade darker for improved visual appeal and legibility."

MORE CHANGES

The green isn't the only thing you may notice that's different about WhatsApp.

Designers have also tweaked the buttons so they're more rounded.

And the default background doodle you see on chats has been updated too to look more "simple in style".

Fortunately, you can change the background if you don't like it - unlike the green colour scheme which is staying put.

Just go to Settings and select Chats.

Then hit Chat Wallpaper where you will find several options.
