Premier League side Everton have confirmed they have withdrawn their appeal against a second points deduction.

The Merseyside club were handed a record 10-point penalty in November, in relation to Financial Fair Play regulations, but this was later reduced to six on appeal. In January, the club were informed of a separate breach, as were rivals Nottingham Forest, with both clubs later handed points penalties as a result.

Everton were docked two points for that second breach, bringing their total penalty to eight, while Forest are four points worse off. After Forest failed with their own appeal, though, Everton have accepted their punishment.

Sean Dyche's side were plunged into relegation danger by the pair of deductions. However, after picking up 10 points from their last four league games, they are now mathematically safe from the drop.

"Everton Football Club has withdrawn its appeal of the decision by a Premier League Independent Commission to impose a two-point deduction on the Club for a breach of the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules for the accounting period ending in June 2023," an Everton statement read. "A hearing, scheduled for later this month, will now not proceed, and the Club will conclude the 2023/24 Premier League season with the two-point deduction remaining in place."

Everton's first points deduction related to the three seasons from 2019-20 to 2021-22, while their second is in relation to 2020-21 through to 2022-23. Everton finished 16th in the first of those seasons and 17th in the second, sealing survival on the final day last term.

It has been altogether more comfortable this term, though the campaign hasn't been without its nervy moments. Were it not for the points deductions, though, the Toffees would find themselves in mid-table.

Even with the penalties, though, survival was secured before last weekend's draw with Luton. Three straight victories did the trick, with Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford all put to the sword at Goodison Park.

"Incredibly pleased and incredibly proud of a group of players who have had knocks all season," Dyche said after the victory over Brentford, in which Idrissa Gana Gueye scored the only goal of the game.. "Some in our control some out of it obviously.

"To put in four out of five clean sheets, to put in four out five wins at this stage of the season with the mounting noise after the Chelsea games is incredible. I think the mentality of the players has been fantastic, We're stretched at the minute with injuries and you could see the clear-mindedness to get the job done. Super pleased and proud."

With safety secured, Everton round off their season against opponents at opposite ends of the table. They host already-relegated Sheffield United on Saturday, before an away trip to title contenders Arsenal on the final day.
