Aaron Rodgers is set to be handed a fine after failing to turn up to New York Jets' mandatory minicamp. The quarterback had informed coaches he would be missing to attend 'an important event'.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh defined it as an 'unexcused absence', which may result in a fine for Rodgers for skipping the first day of the minicamp. Before the start of OTA's, Rodgers communicated with Saleh, but made it clear he wouldn't be present at mandatory minicamp despite potential fines.

In a press briefing, Saleh shared: "Aaron and I spoke before OTAs started. He's been very good in communication. He's been here the entire time. It's unexcused, but he had an event that was very important to him, which he communicated."

Rodgers has been actively participating in the Jets' offseason, being filmed throwing and running for the first time since about a year ago, when he underwent an Achilles tendon damage on the inaugural day of the 2023 season.

The mandatory minicamp runs till Thursday this week, giving the team a set of three practice days. The sessions are their final chance to unite together prior to the summer camp.

Such sessions support team harmony, allowing coaches to brief the players on new formations, and to include new faces into the squad from free agency or draft.

The Jets secured Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for two second-round picks and had hoped to compete last year with a well-rounded team heading into the season. However, Rodgers' injury threw their plans off track, forcing them to rely on backup quarterback Zach Wilson, who struggled significantly before being traded to the Denver Broncos this past offseason.

After another successful offseason, making significant improvements to their offensive line to protect Rodgers, the Jets are considered among the favourites to compete in the AFC this season - but will once again depend on Rodgers returning to his top form.

Rodgers' future is still uncertain, having previously confessed that he might retire after the 2024 season as he approaches his 41st birthday this year. Rodgers is contracted through the 2025 year - but will have a staggering $51 million cap hit if he plays for the Jets, a massive increase from $17 million this year, putting the Jets in a challenging situation for the 2025 season.
