Jorginho has claimed Mikel Arteta wants to stay at Arsenal beyond next season and build a dynasty. “I honestly don’t see him going,” said the Italy midfielder.

The Brazilian-born star had four different managers during four-and-a-half turbulent years at Chelsea before signing for the Gunners in January last year. The former Napoli star, 32, has now signed a 12-month contract to stay at the Premier League leaders next season.

Arteta will enter the final year of his contract this summer and could take his pick of jobs at home and across Europe. His fellow Spaniard Pep Guardiola is also only under contract until 2025. But Jorginho reckons his manager, who once tried to sign him for City, will also be ready to commit his future to the Gunners

“He could stay way longer,” said the Italian. “I feel that he feels good here and I honestly don’t see him going. And it is really important for the club for him to stay because him with (sporting director) Edu and the board, the whole club, they have created something special. I don’t believe he wants to go.”

Arteta, 42, won the FA Cup in his first season and then imposed his authority by moving out Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. “You have the direction that you need to go,” said Jorginho, who has taken all his coaching badges. “You go in that direction or you are not part of the project. It is very clear. Everyone that is here wants to be in the same direction.”

Arsenal have won four consecutive Premier League games since their Champions League elimination to level the number of victories in the Invincibles season of 2003-04. Another win at Old Trafford will set a new club record of 27 wins in a 38-game season and set another high of goals scored in a Premier League season. They have netted 88 in 36 games but have yet to lift a big title. What are they still missing?

Jorginho, who has won the Champions League and Euro 2020, said: “I don’t think we miss much. We are really close as you can see. The consistency now has been really good and that’s how we need to carry on going.

“What he [Arteta] has been doing here since he joined has been incredible. It is not just a coincidence where we are now. It is such a long process that he has been doing really well with the club, and now with the team, with the fans.

"The whole thing is working really well because everyone is looking in the same direction. Every little part that you add to the team is just to make the team better and achieve things.”

The title’s destiny is in City’s hands with a game in hand. But Jorginho said Arsenal have to make them win it by taking maximum points from their final three games, including a visit to Tottenham on Tuesday.

“The first thing that we have to do is our part,” he said. “Otherwise there is no point in even hoping. It is very simple and very clear. We need to win these two games and see what they do.”
