“Growing plants can help purify and improve air quality, reduce stress, boost mood, and even encourage healthy eating," she said.
SPIDER PLANTS
Björkman said spider plants are among the most popular houseplants and "do particularly well" when grown in a bathroom.
I'm a property expert - my guess for the cheapest time to buy a home this yearShe said they are easy to care for, have air-purifying qualities, and are both pet and child-friendly.
They absorb harmful gases and unnatural toxins in the air, like formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, and carbon monoxide.
"During the summer they produce tiny white flowers on long stems with baby spider plants called 'pups,'" Björkman explained.
Many think they look like tiny spiders, which is how the plant got its name.
The gardening expert offered helpful tips for growing the home addition.
Once the pups begin to take root, Björkman said to "simply snip the runner."
This is the stem that connects the pup to the main plant.
Lastly, place the pup in a glass of water for up to five days.
Björkman explained that this is supposed to help the roots grow out before planting in its own pot.
There is a financial benefit to buying the bathroom plant.
Inside Camilla's £850k 'guilty pleasure' country pad - and Charles 'hates' it"Invest in one spider plant and you’ll never have to buy another," she said.
ALOE VERA
Aloe vera is another plant that Björkman said thrives in bathroom conditions.
It doesn’t require too much attention or water and can soak in the humidity in the air.
"As a bonus, it has medicinal properties," she added.
Its sticky sap helps soothe skin conditions including burns, scrapes, and grazes.
"Simply snap off a small part of the leaf and squeeze the healing gel onto your skin," she explained.
TRAILING IVY
Lastly, Björkman said that "the warm, humid conditions of a bathroom also make it the perfect location for trailing ivy."
She said it looks best when displayed on a shelf with the leafy tendrils tumbling down.
Even if the bathroom isn't humid, mist it every day so it stays vibrant and green.
According to experts at Patch Plants, "it's happy in most light conditions but bright light is best."
Tending to plants is a "therapeutic activity the whole family can get involved in," according to Björkman.
