Adding houseplants to your bathroom not only slashes the risk of mould but also helps detoxify your home, say experts.

Big Bathroom Shop has identified five plants that will "thrive" in humid conditions. Among them is the cactus, known for its resilience in hot, steamy environments. The experts shared: "Whilst this low maintenance plant requires at least six hours of sunlight a day, they don't require direct sunlight, meaning you can place them wherever you like to bring an urban feel to your bathroom as long as there is a source of natural light."

Aloe vera, not just pleasing to the eye but also beneficial for skin health, makes another excellent bathroom companion. However, its placement is crucial for its survival. It thrives on a sunny windowsill. Easy to care for, it needs minimal watering just keep an eye on the soil moisture to avoid over-drying.

Ivy comes highly recommended too, described as one of the "easiest" plants to maintain in a bathroom setting. The experts noted: "They enjoy warm, humid environments, so they are great for shower rooms", reports the Express. Plus, ivy doesn't demand much sunlight and can prosper even in shaded areas, perfect for bathrooms with small or no windows, unlike many other houseplants.

"Ivy can also help cleanse the air, with reports of English ivy tackling up to 78 per cent of airborne mould." When it comes to selecting a fern for your bathroom, some varieties will flourish more than others, with Boston ferns and Bird's nests being ideal choices. While some may need more humidity than others, generally speaking, this type of houseplant is a fantastic addition to any bathroom.

The experts explained: "Ferns require proper and regular drainage but thrive in humidity, and so experts suggest hanging ferns within the shower to get daily quench of thirst." Interestingly, Venus fly traps can also do well in bathrooms, despite needing a bit more care than other plants.

The bathroom specialists added: "Their soil requires regular watering, but the moisture in the air makes the bathroom a perfect environment for nourishing a venus fly trap's leaves. Although, as with the cacti, these plants won't last long in a windowless room, as they require indirect sunlight."
