For most dog owners, even the thought of abandoning a dog is unthinkable. In instances where, for one reason or another, a dog owner is unable to keep their pet, most people would opt to hand their beloved pooch into an animal shelter. However, one Reddit user has been left horrified after learning that her parents instead used to abandon her beloved dogs on the highway when she was a child.

A woman took to the forum to share how her sister recently let slip that their parents used to abandon their dogs when they felt they ‘wouldn’t be able to take care of the dog’ anymore and said: “Back when I was in middle school, I had two dogs. We’ve had dogs for as long as I can remember but none of them stayed long. We adopted one dog after another (after each one either died or mysteriously ran away) because I was a huge dog lover and won my parents over each time they refused to bring home a dog.”

The woman also revealed how, when her dad was angry he would beat the dogs and she would try to protect them, and said: “Whenever I was present for this, I calmed him down and protected my dogs. But I couldn’t be around all the time. Because I protected them soon after he started beating them, I never realised the extent of his anger. That is, until today. I had a conversation with my sister about our past (she cut contact with our parents years back) and she mentioned something about how many of our dogs were abandoned.”

Revealing that she was ‘clueless’ about what her sister meant, the woman went on to share what her sister told her, and said: “Whenever our parents felt like they wouldn’t be able to take care of the dog anymore, they would drop them off at a highway far away from our place so the dogs won’t be able to find their way back home. I am beyond devastated by this. I had no idea this is what they did. They claimed the dogs ran away by themselves.”

The heartbroken woman added that she remembered a time when one of her dogs “went missing” and her dad stayed outside with her for hours while she ‘searched the entire neighbourhood, screaming at top of my lungs, crying for them to find their way back to me’.

On hearing the truth from her sister, she was left devastated and said: “I feel absolutely horrified and I don’t know how to confront them about this. I’m 100% sure they’re just gonna lie to me and claim no such thing happened.” Reddit users were quick to comment, with one saying: “The beating of the dogs alone… I just cannot imagine this sort of cruelty. I am sorry you had to experience this. And I am so so sorry for the dogs who endured all this neglect and cruelty.”

While a second added: “I’m sorry but I couldn’t not confront them about this. I would definitely tell them how disgusting they are as human beings and would never talk to them again until they realize the magnitude of what they did to those innocent dogs. I’m not talking about fake tears and all but genuine remorse which I doubt they’d have. Makes me so angry.” A third said: “Tell them that you realised what they did to the dogs, tell them this is the last straw and then never talk to them again.”
