Manchester United have cancelled their traditional end of season awards dinner in the wake of their calamitous campaign.

The Red Devils have significantly struggled this term under Erik ten Hag, who has seen his stock plummet in recent months after a strong maiden year at the helm, and the beleaguered Dutchman could even miss out on Europe altogether with United currently eighth in the Premier League table.

It has now been decided by the club, following talks between Ten Hag and Sir Jim Ratcliffe 's football leadership team, that their annual end of season awards dinner will not take place later this month.

According to The Athletic, the decision was taken to ensure there are no distractions for Ten Hag or his squad ahead of the FA Cup final with Manchester City, which takes place later this month - just days after the date the dinner was planned for.

The report goes on to note that players will still receive awards which will be voted on by their team-mates, coaches and fans, but the dinner and corresponding ceremony will not take place.

The event was previously cancelled back in 2022, shortly before Ten Hag's arrival. That campaign marked the club's worst in the Premier League era to date and ended with interim boss Ralf Rangnick in charge following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's sacking.

Ten Hag was appointed as the club's new permanent manager later that summer and made an instant impact, winning the Carabao Cup and guiding United to a third-place finish to qualify for the Champions League.

But any credit he had in the bank has slowly eroded over the course of a season which looks likely to surpass the disastrous 2021/22 campaign.

United need to win and hope other results go in their favour over the next week if they are to qualify for either the Europa League or Europa Conference League. The Red Devils host Newcastle, two places and three points above them in the league, in midweek before bringing the curtain down on their domestic campaign with a trip to Brighton next Sunday.

United would also qualify for Europe should they win the FA Cup, although Manchester City are the red-hot favourites for the blue-ribbon event which will take place at Wembley later this month.
