When it comes to tackling those dreaded household chores, many of us are guilty of cleaning just the visible surfaces - but Mrs Hinch has shared a clever hack for an easily-missed area.

The online sensation, whose real name is Sophie Hinchliffe, took to social media to highlight the build-up of food and grime that can accumulate in your kitchen plughole. In an Instagram story, the household icon revealed her tried-and-tested technique for cleaning this area, which also eliminates unpleasant odours.

To start the task, Sophie placed a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda over the plugholes before pouring white vinegar over the top. This combination is a kitchen cupboard essential, which works wonders for cleaning appliances and sprucing up pipes.

Bicarb is a gentle abrasive and natural deodoriser that can dissolve mineral deposits and organic materials such as grease, explains The Spruce. Meanwhile, vinegar has been hailed the "staple" of housekeeping hacks due to its balanced acidic properties.

Sophie then pulled out a trusty teaspoon to assist her with the trick. Speaking to her 4.8 million followers, she said: "It's very clear that none of us like a smelly plug. But if bicarb and vinegar doesn't do the trick it may be worth checking deeper, let me show you this ..."

She then took the spoon and unscrewed the plughole to release the plate. While the surrounding surface appeared immaculate, the area under the drain cover was coated in grime, suggesting plugholes can easily be neglected.

Addressing the issue, Sophie used Cif and her reliable SonicScrubber to lift the dirt, which came off easily. She continued: "Not gonna lie... This is my idea of heaven. The satisfaction is real."

To finish the chore, she poured some of her favourite Zoflora down the drain. In response to the video, one cleaning enthusiast was left disgusted after trying the out the trick.

Posting on the Cleaning & Organising Inspiration Australia Facebook group, they penned: "After watching this on TikTok i thought I'd give it a try! How long has it been since you’ve actually cleaned your sink?"

She explained: "Use a butter knife to open the bolt and find the filth underneath (it stinks as well). Once its opened pour bicarb soda over everything, then spray some white vinegar over it and let it bubble. Scrub with a brush and rinse with hot water...so much better now its clean!"
