Job interviews can be incredibly nerve-wracking but the best way to get ready is to do as much preparation as possible. However, be difficult to anticipate what questions they might ask you and get your answers ready.

If you have an interview coming and looking for some advice, an employment expert shared her advice on how to best prepare for behavioural job interview questions and it might surprise you.

Erin McGoff is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, director, and editor who has built up a huge following on social media thanks to TikTok's giving career advice. Posting to her 2.8 million followers, she wrote in the caption: “These questions are designed to get a sense of how you’ve handled yourself professionally in difficult or challenging situations.

“They usually start out with, 'Tell me about a time when…' and are SUPER hard to answer if you aren’t prepared! They’re really difficult to answer because they want a very specific story time right on the spot.”

She added: “They’re not gonna like fact check it they just wanna get a good sense of your character and professionalism. And most of these questions are asking the same thing, which is basically ‘how have you dealt with conflict and difficult situations?’ If you’re stuck, just use the S-T-A-R method.”

S-T-A-R stands for 'situation' as in describing the environment where the example took place, 'task' what happened that needed to be resolved, 'action' what you did to fix things, and 'result' how it all finished. Putting the method into practice, Erin posed the question: "Can you tell me about a time that you disagreed with your boss and how you handled that?”

Breaking down the method, she then answered with the first point - ‘situation’. She went on: “Sure! So in my previous role, I was working as a marketing associate for a tech startup and my boss and I had a really great working relationship.”

Continuing by highlighting the next section, ‘task’. Erin went on: “We were working on a marketing campaign for a new product and my boss wanted to take a more traditional approach focusing on advertising, however, I felt that leveraging social media influencers and UGC would be more effective for this product.”

Explaining the ‘action’ part of her response, she continued: “So approached my boss, I made my case I showed all the research and data to support my suggestion and in the end, we decided to split the budget and test out both methods.”

Concluding, with the ‘result’ portion of the method, she said: “We reached a wide audience, we gained a ton of insights and the campaign was a huge success!” She finished: “Be authentic – talk about what was truly challenging to you and how you overcame it. Be humble, be earnest, and be concise. YOU GOT THIS!”

People watching Erin’s video appreciated her advice, with one user responding: “I always write down examples because I know my brain will blank in an interview.” While another user admitted: “I have made up a story to answer these questions more than once. I tell it true to how I would actually act in a professional setting though.”
