Kate Winslet has spoken about dealing with being in the spotlight following her role in the acclaimed film Titanic.

The actor, 48, starred in the film, which was released in 1997, with Leonardo DiCaprio. She has now revealed in an interview that she found it hard to talk about how hurt she was by commentary on her body following her role in it.

Speaking to Variety magazine, she said: "I actually felt a bit beaten up by it, truth be told … I had a lovely family, but all my family saw is 'my God, Kate's got work in a really big film.' One doesn't want to turn around to your mum and dad and say 'it's really hard, actually'."

Kate is said to have spoken to Variety shortly after the Met Gala last month. She said she was "smiling" because in photos from the red carpet "every woman is sharing their body in the way they want to" and "on their terms".

She further commented in the interview: "And knowing they can do that safely, because the media is not going to criticize them." Kate added that it's "completely different from the way it used to be" years ago. She said: "This s**t went on for years."

It was also revealed that Kate's chances of being in the movie were almost sunk by the film's director James Cameron, 69. He says he resisted casting her in the 1997 blockbuster because at the time she was known as "corset Kate" having been in period dramas such as Sense and Sensibility.

James added that it "seemed like lazy casting". But he said that "wiser heads prevailed" and she was given the starring role as Rose. On the casting process, James told Variety she sent him "a single rose" and told him 'I have to be your Rose'.

James and Kate, 48, have also denied rumours of a feud. James said that there was "never a rift" between them. They reunited for 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water, years after Kate suggested she would not work with him again.
