There are some wedding rules you shouldn't break.

Every bride and groom will have their own expectations when it comes to their wedding. Whether they want guests to wear specific colours or have decided to ban anyone from wearing hats, every ceremony is different and for the most part, the couple's wishes should be respected.

One universal rule when it comes to most Western weddings, however, is that no one should wear white apart from the bride. So, when one bride-to-be's father told her that's exactly what he would be wearing, it unsurprisingly caused a rift in the family – and his excuse only made things worse.

Taking to Reddit, the bride's sister said she recently asked her dad what he planned on wearing to walk his daughter down the aisle, and he "point blank" said he would be wearing a "white suit".

When he was questioned on his controversial choice, he gave an excuse which left his daughter reeling. He said, as the father of the bride, he has the "right to dress however I please".

In an attempt to diffuse the situation and save her sister's wedding from disaster, the man's other daughter tried to explain in most weddings it is "solely" the bride that wears white. But this did little to dissuade the dad, who then pointed out the flaws of the white dress tradition.

White is a colour associated with purity and virtue in many societies, so white wedding dresses were originally worn to symbolise the bride being "pure" and abstaining from sex until marriage. But as the bride-to-be "already has kids", the dad argued she shouldn't be wearing white anyway.

The bride's sister wrote in her post: "When I gently told him that typically (read: 9 times out of 10) solely the bride wears white for the wedding day, he doubled down and said that my sister already has kids and shouldn't be wearing white anyhow. Sigh ... This is gonna be an interesting wedding."

Commenters on the post were quick to point out the dad's flaw in his own logic, as many said that if the bride can't wear white because she's got kids, neither can he. One person wrote: "Um, your dad has kids too, so ..."

But others said it should be fine for the dad to wear white, as no one will confuse him for the bride.

Someone posted: "Nobody will care if he wears white, I don't know if he is walking your sister down the aisle, it could be quite sweet. Let him wear white, nobody looks at men." Another added: "I don't think he'll be confused for the bride. How does your sister feel? Her and her spouse are the only opinions that matter."
