Mikael Silvestre insists that Arsenal's season will not be classified as a failure should they come up short in the title race on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta's men have run Manchester City close for the Premier League crown for a second consecutive year but head into the final matchweek of the season needing the reigning champions to slip up in order to end their 20-year title drought.

Arsenal fell away in the final weeks of the 2022/23 campaign but had gone the distance this time around. And Silvestre, who spent two years at the Emirates after leaving Manchester United, reckons it's been a positive season regardless of how it ends.

Silvestre, speaking to bettingexpert.com, explained: “It is not going to be a failure if Arsenal don’t win the league. It’ll be painful, it is painful but you have to look at the big picture, the opponents and also the progress of the team. Did the team progress, yes! Is it good enough to win the league, we will see. Who knows what will happen!”

He continued: “You have to look at the competition as well. You can’t just look at Arsenal and if they fail to win anything. You have Manchester City and had Liverpool in the race.

“You had a tough opponent in the Champions League. Reaching the quarter-final was good. It was a close game against Bayern Munich.”

Despite enduring a rocky start under Arteta, Arsenal have slowly but surely managed to re-establish themselves as a force in the Premier League during the Spaniard's tenure.

The Gunners last won the Premier League title back in 2004 and there's every chance that their wait to right that could stretch beyond two decades this weekend. But Silvestre is of the opinion that they will, at least, continue to remain in the conversation for major honours under Arteta.

“It’s a young team, a young manager, so you can expect them to continue. I think financially they are also capable of getting the team stronger,” he concluded.

“If you look at the squad, the environment, the back office, the people behind the scenes, starting with the manager, the sporting director, there’s no doubt that they will be there next season in the mix for the title and compete for it again.”
