Ally McCoist has 'gut feeling' over Liverpool’s title chances under Arne Slot

Ally McCoist has dismissed the chances of Liverpool launching a title bid in Arne Slot's first season in charge.

Slot, who will start his role on June 1 after Liverpool agreed to pay Feyenoord a £9.4million compensation, is set to take on the head coach role rather than stepping into Jurgen Klopp's shoes as manager.

Under Klopp, Liverpool's title hopes faded towards the end of the season, with Manchester City and Arsenal taking the title race down to the wire. The Reds finished nine points adrift of the champions, although they managed to secure a 2-0 victory against Wolves in Klopp's final game.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist expressed doubts about Liverpool's ability to compete for top spot in the 2024/25 season as Slot settles into his new position. He suggested that the younger players at Liverpool might not be up to the task of sustaining a title challenge against teams like City and Arsenal.

"I don't think Liverpool will be fighting for the title next season, I've just got a gut feeling," he said on Tuesday. "I'm just not sure the younger ones are ready to come up and grab the mantle and carry on again. They fell away a little bit [this season] after a magnificent effort," via the Liverpool Echo.

"Liverpool fell away and there was that midweek defeat at Everton. There were just little signs there that I'm not sure they have the consistency required to win the league and challenge right at the top next year."

Host Jeff Stelling commented: "Great squad but whether it's quite at the level of Arsenal and Manchester City is debatable."

Adding to the debate, McCoist pointed out the uncertainties surrounding the future of the team, noting: "There are question marks over whether people like Salah stay. They might all stay, and they might add to it, you don't know. Massive club, wonderful support and they will, without doubt, get behind the new manager."
