Sunbed wars as holidaymakers spark fury with five loungers each around pool

Holidaymakers in Benidorm have slammed 'selfish' fellow tourists for stacking up sunbeds near a hotel pool.

Paul Hitchcock, who regularly stays in the Spanish resort town, shared a snap of two sunseekers at his hotel laying on top of five sunbeds between them. Multiple beds are stacked on top of each other.

Claiming this behaviour is widespread, he said in an accompanying Facebook post: "Two people, five sunbeds, and they are not the only ones".

The snap has since sparked a fierce debate online, with some criticising the men pictured for appearing to take more than their fair share of beds.

An unimpressed holidaymaker wrote: "I'd throw the towels off and take them. Not on them, they're not 'yours'". A different person penned "I would get the hotel staff to do something about it", and another wrote: "That is so out of order."

But others have claimed that the sunbeds provided at holiday resorts are often too low, meaning those with joint problems need to stack them for comfort. One woman commented: "Ask them to move them if people need them. It's not right but if they have dodgy knees like me and can't get up easily I get why they are doing it."

Last year, sunbed wars raged across some of Europe's favourite holiday hotspots as tourists from different nations clashed for a top spot by the pool. In one TikTok video from Tenerife showing some of the desperate antics, a crowd of sunseekers were seen running to sunbeds and putting down their belongings, while others flung their towels onto the seats in front of them.

Thomas Clifford, who captured the video last summer, said: "I couldn’t believe it! People were sniping by throwing their towels off the top of the stairs. I felt sorry for the poor man trying to clean the pool as everyone stampeded him!". One hotel in Majorca was also forced to lock its doors to the pool area overnight, after people began lining their towels up outside the swimming zone in the early hours of the morning.

It comes as Brit holidaymakers were warned about a new rule that could jeopardise people's getaways to Spain. The new rule has been brought in by Spanish lawmakers requiring tourists to prove they have €113.40 (£97) on hand every day if they visit. It applies to both the mainland and archipelagos popular with British sunseekers, such as the Canary and Balearic islands.
