Lily Allen has revealed that cocaine use helped her feel more liberated while creating music.

The Smile singer, who's been sober for almost five years after ditching class-As and booze in 2019, confessed that these substances helped in quashing her inner critic when writing tracks.

She candidly told The Observer: "Drugs and alcohol were very good at drowning out my inner critic." Allen disclosed her creative process saying, "When you take cocaine you think all of your ideas are brilliant and need to be shared."

In terms of new tunes, Allen mentioned she's been working on fresh material: "I have about 100 of them!" However, a profile piece from The Observer noted that she currently doesn't rate her new work too highly, deciding to pump the brakes on her music career to delve into acting.

Set for a summer run in the play Hedda Gabler in Bath, Allen is using this break to focus on spending quality time with daughters Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 11, from her previous marriage to 46 year old Sam Cooper. While enjoying life with Stranger Things star and hubby since 2020, David Harbour, aged 49, Allen expressed nostalgia for her live performing days: "I can really miss those extreme highs."

Reflecting further, she said: "Like I miss being on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury and rushing my t*** off." Acknowledging that such moments are behind her, she added a touch of melancholy: "I know that I will never experience that again, and there's a sadness that comes with that."

Yet Allen emphasises the positive change in her mental state: "But I am level. I'm no longer having really terrible, long periods of time of absolute despair." Allen has faced a series of personal challenges, including the tragic stillbirth of her son George in 2010, her split from Sam Cooper, and a terrifying stalker incident in 2015 that saw an obsessed fan break into her bedroom.
