A missing American tourist was found dead on a beach on a Greek Island - just a week after Dr Michael Mosley was tragically found.

The body of the man was found Sunday on a rocky, fairly remote beach on the island of Mathraki by another tourist. He had been reported missing Thursday by his host, a Greek-American friend. The tourist had last been seen Tuesday at a cafe in the company of two female tourists who have since left the island.

No further details about the victim, including a name or hometown, were immediately available. Mathraki, which has a population of 100, is a 1.2-square-mile heavily wooded island, west of the better-known island of Corfu.

This was the latest in a string of recent cases in which tourists on the Greek islands have died or gone missing. Some, if not all, had set out on hikes in very hot temperatures.

A 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found by a fire department drone on Saturday lying face down in a ravine about 300 metres (330 yards) from the spot where he was last observed last Sunday, walking with some difficulty in the blistering heat.

It comes after Michael Mosley, the beloved TV doctor and nutritionist died last week after taking a walk through the wilderness on the island of Symi. Search crews spent nearly four days looking for the 67-year-old before he was discovered behind a wall just feet away from a resort on Agia Marina beach.

A post-mortem examination later revealed Michael had died at around 4pm on Wednesday of natural causes, with no initial signs of injury. Separate toxicology and histology reports have now been ordered.

When did the first tourist go missing?

The first American tourist to go missing in Greece was 59-year-old former police officer Eric Calibet, who vanished last Tuesday after deciding to go for a solo hike on the Greek island of Amorgos. He left the port settlement of Aegilali just after 7am, according to authorities.

He is believed to have been heading to Katapola, the island's main port, around a four-hour hike from where he set off. But, he never returned and eight hours later a friend grew concerned and reported him missing. A search was launched on Tuesday afternoon with reinforcements called in from Naxos Island.

What was the last message sent by the former cop?

Police requested data from mobile operators in a bid to determine the man's last known location. Authorities have been unable to contact Calibet via either of his two mobile phones.

According to local media reports, the last message he sent was to his sister which was a picture of a trail sign. Calibet has been visiting the island of Amorgos every year since 2009. While temperatures peaked in the area, his family and friends say he was "familiar" with the hike he had planned and his disappearance has left them confused.

Why the devastated family believe 'something has happened'

Eric's family has spoken about their distress around the disappearance of the former California sheriff’s deputy telling NBC News “every minute, every hour that passes it gets more sad.”

“He’s so physically fit. He’s so strong. God forbid if he had a heart attack, he’d be on the trail and they would have found him already,” Friend Robin Winston Leon told Fox News Digital. “Something’s happened to our friend and the clock is ticking and we need him to be found already.”

Amorgos is a remote island with a population of less than 2,000 people, said Leon. “It’s 30 miles from (the Greek island of) Santorini, which is the nearest place with an airport,” she said. “They can’t get the resources there to help (with) the search.” None of the missing man's belongings have been recovered.

Who else has gone missing?

Authorities were still searching for four people reported missing in the past few days. On Friday, two French tourists were reported missing on Sikinos, a relatively secluded Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea, with less than 400 permanent residents.

The two women, aged 73 and 64, had left their respective hotels to meet.

A 70-year-old American tourist was reported missing Thursday on the small island of Mathraki in Greece’s northwest extremity by his host, a Greek-American friend. The tourist had last been seen Tuesday at a cafe in the company of two female tourists who have since left the island.
