Alan Hansen is "sounding fabulous" amid his ongoing road to recovery, according to former team-mate and friend Graeme Souness.

Souness revealed on talkSPORT that he had spoken to the former Liverpool and Scotland defender on the phone on Sunday night, adding that Hansen seemed to be in a good place. The news arrives after Souness previously said he was praying for his friend to return to good health while he remained in serious condition after being admitted to hospital earlier this month.

The period was described a "desperate time" for Hansen's wife and children by Souness, who was joined by the footballing world in sending messages of support for the Scot.

And Souness has issued an encouraging update on his old international and Anfield colleague, who looks set to make a full recovery after fears of the worst.

“I spoke to him yesterday and he sounded fabulous so I hope that’s him on the way to a full recovery," Souness said. "He’s definitely back because he did nothing but take the Mickey out of me!"

Souness added: “I’ve been speaking to his son and Janet his wife and I’ve been phoning his phone, his phone number," Souness explained. "I got on the train on Sunday and I was looking for my seat and my phone rang and I could see it was Big Al.

"I was thinking ‘Oh no, don’t answer that’. So I sat down and got the courage to phone back and he answered the phone. He’s been in a difficult place but the way he sounded yesterday, he’s back, and I hope I’m right.”

Souness had previously described his compatriot as "one of the good guys" when speaking on Friday. The 71-year-old also paid tribute to Hansen when appearing as an ITV pundit for the coverage of Scotland's Euro 2024 defeat to Germany.

On Monday, Souness told Jim White on the Talk Sport breakfast show that the fact he was giving him a ribbing proves he’s fighting back.

Earlier in the week, Souness also penned an emotional tribute to Hansen, stating: "Alan is a rare breed in life, as I don't know anyone who has a bad word to say about him. The best footballing centre back ever. He's a rascal with a ruthless sense of humour. Great company, a great storyteller...and apparently a great memory."

Souness also reflected fondly on their time together on the pitch. "That banter we had and that we used to share at Liverpool, those are days I wish I could live all over again," he added. "He is the best of men. I just can't believe he is fighting for his life."
