Animated sitcom The Simpsons has long been associated with predicting the future during its 35-year history, but perhaps Matt Groening's show was a mysterious foresight in itself.
For a photo of an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus dating back more than 3,000 years appears to bear an uncanny resemblance to the dysfunctional TV family's matriarch, Marge. The coffin, which was unearthed in an Egyptian cemetery, depicts a yellow-coloured woman on its lid, dressed in green clothing and a blue crown similiar in appearance to Marge's famous tall hairstyle.
According to a now-deleted Reddit post which resurfaced this week, the tomb dates back to the "New Kingdom, 20th Dynasty (circa 1186-1069 B.C.)" and is the goddess Nut. A history buff explained on the post: "That's the goddess Nut. I've seen the other pieces belonging to this grave, I think the parents (the deceased was a 16-year-old girl) may just not have had a lot of money so they did the best they could afford."
She continued: "Her shroud is a lot better looking, still in the same wonky style, but so much more attention and love has been put into it. It kinda hits me in the heart every time I see it."
Others, meanwhile, were quick to discuss Nut's likeness to the mum of Bart, Lisa and Maggie and how the ancient civilisation must have "predicted" Marge. "So the Egyptians predicted the Simpsons? Plot twist," declared one Redditor. Another joked: "The Simpsons predicted it. No wait, the Egyptians predicted the Simpsons."
Inside wildest 2023 Simpsons related predictions - from global war to new virus"The only documented time in history where The Simpsons didn’t do it first," quipped a third. While a fourth penned: "I know the Simpson have been on for along time but I didn’t know that long."
Elsewhere on the post, several Reddit users suggested The Simpsons' production must have the ability to travel through time, such is their apparent ability too see into the future and delve into the past.
"Obviously Matt Groening is a 33rd degree mason and has telekinetic communication with creatures outside of our realms of understanding to conjure a character such as Marge to be based from a 3000 year old Ancient Egyptian painting, there are probably other Simpson characters Groening has created based on unrecovered Ancient Egyptian art," one person theorised.
A second added: "Just a further proof that the creators of The Simpsons can definitely travel through time…" And another agreed: "Well, It's chronologically impossible for the ancient Egyptians to have known about Marge Simpson so, Ipso facto... Time travelling aliens must be involved. There's no other logical explanation."
Some of the show's most famous 'predictions' to come true include Donald Trump's presidency, a flu-like pandemic similar to Covid-19 and the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
