Residents in an Irish city residents were met with revolting sights as sewage flooded into local waters.

Locals in Galway were appalled to discover human waste gushing into the nearby waters on Sunday morning, particularly from the channel by the Lough Gate next to the Claddagh basin. A shocked Galwegian stumbled upon the mess and expressed his dismay on the popular Facebook group, Galway Faces and Places.

"Out and about this is the raw sewage coming out of the channel by the lough gate beside The Claddagh basin 24/7 what is it doing to Galway Bay?" he posted on the group. The spillage poses a serious health risk, with reports of children falling severely ill, reports Galway Beo.

One mother recounted her daughter's hospitalisation: "My little girl ended up in hospital for a week with E. coli and cryptosporidium, after playing by the water in Salthill. She also missed give weeks from school as she was so sick. Never again. It's beyond disgusting."

Similar incidents of sewage overflowing into popular swimming spots in Galway have previously been reported. This worrying incident comes after the 2023 bathing waters report from the Environmental Protection Agency pollution, which showed a rise from 34 in 2022 to 45 last year, leading to more beach closures than ever before in a bid to protect public health.

One of the worst affected beaches includes Trá na mBan An Spidéal in Co Galway. Most were impacted by pollution from sewage overflows and misconnections, while the pollutants at Trá na mBan largely came from agriculture, septic tanks and urban wastewater.
