Kelly Rowland was caught in a heated exchange at the Cannes Film Festival as she found herself in the middle of a red carpet "nightmare".

The 43-year-old looked incredible as she entered the event wearing a vibrant red dress and a dramatic statement necklace. However, body language expert Judi James said she soon changed from "regal elegance" to a display of "authority" as she became engaged in a verbal dispute with a member of staff.

Kelly was photographed in the exchange when a security guard tried guiding her up the steps at the festival. The singer wagged her finger at the woman and even appeared to turn back to further admonish the member of staff after she had walked further up the stairs.

Judi told us: "The hilarious aspect of this clip is how Kelly shape-shifts from a state of gracious, regal, hand-on-chest elegance to a finger-waggling state of what looks like authority in three easy stages." She added: "The red carpet is largely a 'one shot' appearance.

"You walk in, adopt your pre-planned, pre-rehearsed pose for the press, hold it for the eternity it takes for them all to record it, then waft on wearing the same expression. Kelly's finger-waggle proved more of a story than her gracious wafting though, which she should have known would happen.

"She had the option of 'ventriloquism' where many celebs will correct behaviour or verbalise their displeasure but in a masked way, speaking from the side of the mouth while retaining a flawless smile for the cameras. What we see here though is a gesture of authority and reprimand in that long, upward-pointing, waggling finger and she's using it on a member of staff, not a fellow star who has done something to displease her."

Judi said it was easy to see the moment Kelly's irritation grew "as the security team try to usher her along as she is keen to throw some more poses at the cameras." The expert added: "With their arms held out to usher, Kelly turns to one and touches her arm in what looks like an amicable signal to back off.

"Then the finger comes up, finally ending in a full, raised baton gesture as she turns her face fully towards the woman and speaks in what looks like a commanding way, suggesting displeasure," Judi suggested the tense exchange could have been down to strict timings at the festival.

She explained: "The woman laughs it off but she and the rest of the team seem to have been briefed to be firm with the timings here. Red carpet backlogs can be a nightmare for celebrities as well as security and when time is tight in terms of each individual appearance there will often be a lot of steering going on."

It's unclear what Kelly and the security guard were saying, but sources claim staff members at the festival were being "aggressive". Speaking to the Daily Mail, a source said the argument happened after Kelly "had it" with the behaviour of the security guards. They explained: "The people who are assigned to helping stars walk the red carpet were being aggressive and Kelly was trying to ignore it."

They added: "By the time she got to the last woman she had had it because she scolded Kelly and told her to move when she was trying to wave to fans and help the paparazzi get their shot." The source also said Kelly "doesn’t care if she comes across like a diva". The Mirror has approached Kelly's representatives for comment as well as the Cannes Film Festival.
