France fear Kylian Mbappe will have to sit out of Friday's clash with Netherlands - despite being told the superstar does not require surgery to fix his broken nose.

Mbappe headed to hospital in Dusseldorf in the back of an ambulance for an assessment on Monday night after Les Bleus squeezed past Austria in their Group D opener.

But the 25-year-old's gruesome injury overshadowed the 1-0 victory and sources close to the French camp have disclosed to Mirror Football that there is concern surrounding the potential nature and severity of the swelling as it could complicate breathing.

Mbappe, who was booked for reentering the field and laying down on the turf following assistance, is due to undergo further checks at France's base on Tuesday where he is set to have his own personal protective mask fitted.

France doctor Dr. Franck Le Gall is then set to brief boss Didier Deschamps on Mbappe's condition and collectively, they will make a call on his availability for both training and the Netherlands match in Leipzig.

The Real Madrid forward is poised to do everything within his power to play but ultimately the decision could be taken out of his hands by Deschamps and his staff. The ex-Paris Saint-Germain man tweeted late last night: "Any ideas for masks?"

Les Bleus play Poland in Dortmund next Tuesday in their final match of the group phases and one week of rest would likely enable Mbappe's swelling to subside.

The France Football Federation said via a statement in the early hours of Tuesday morning: “Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team. Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France held this Monday in Düsseldorf.

“The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr. Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture. Mbappe will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future.

“A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment."

Former Southampton defender Danso took to social media last night to explain the clash with Mbappe was accidental, writing on X: "To French supporters: I am disappointed that Kylian Mbappe was blessed in our match. I want him to be well-established and I hope he can quickly take his place on the pitch."

Leeds defender Maximilian Wober's own goal proved to be the difference between the sides, though Mbappe squandered a glorious opening to put France out of sight before suffering the blow.
