While she was on remand before her trial, serial killer Joanna Dennehy plotted to maim a guard in a bid to escape.

Psychopathic serial killer Joanna Dennehy is serving a life sentence for killing three men over a 10-day period in March 2013 and dumping their bodies in ditches outside Peterborough, leading to the murdering spree becoming known as the Peterborough Ditch Murders. Her story is being explored tonight in Channel 5's The Killing Spree: Hunting Joanna Dennehy.

The victims were Lukasz Slaboszewski, Kevin Lee and John Chapman. In Hereford two other men were stabbed but they survived. The three men who died were stabbed in the heart and were all known to their killer.

Lukasz was a Polish national and met Dennehy a few days before through their shared love of drink and drugs. Landlord Kevin was a married father of two who she was having an affair with, while John was a housemate of hers - they were both killed on the same day, March 29. She dressed Kevin in a black sequinned dress before dumping his corpse in a sexual position.

While a nationwide police search was sparked after the bodies were found in remote ditches in Cambridgeshire, she drove 140 miles to Hereford where she repeatedly stabbed two dog walkers, Robin Bereza and John Rogers, entirely at random. Both survived.

A court was told that the killer had a "thirst for blood" and while on the journey to Hereford the court heard that Joanna told her accomplice Gary Stretch (formerly known as Gary Richards) and friend Mark Lloyd: "I want to have my fun, I need you to get my fun." She also apparently bragged that she and Gary were "like Bonnie and Clyde" and said she "wanted nine victims". She later told a psychiatrist she found killing "moreish" and that after the first one she "got a taste for it".

Dennehy was arrested as she sat in a green Vauxhall Astra they had been travelling in and waited for Stretch, who was trying to sell stolen goods at a nearby address. While on remand, the mother of two was placed in segregation at HM Prison Bronzefield - a category A prison in Surrey.

It was there that staff found her diary containing details of an escape plot. She planned to kill or seriously injure a prison guard by cutting off one of their fingers and using his fingerprint to trick the biometric system in the jail. Because of this she was placed in solitary confinement for two years from September 2013, which was just before court proceedings, to September 2015. She claimed her human rights had been violated and that the isolation had left her "tearful and upset" and caused her to self harm. It was ruled that solitary confinement was necessary because of the risk she caused to the public should she escape.

At her trial in November 2013, shortly after the plot was discovered, she pleaded guilty to all three murders and two further attempted murders. She was diagnosed with psychopathic, anti-social and borderline personality disorders and laughed during proceedings at the Old Bailey.

On 28 February 2014, she was sentenced to life imprisonment with an order that she should never be released due to the premeditation of each murder. She is one of only three women in the UK - alongside the late Myra Hindley and Rosemary West - in English history to be told that she can never be released.

Judge Mr Justice Spencer told the court: "Within the space of ten days you murdered three men in cold blood. Although you pleaded guilty, you've made it quite clear you have no remorse." He added: "You are a cruel, calculating, selfish and manipulative serial killer."

The judge described how Dennehy had sent him a letter saying she was not sorry for the murders. He added that she told a psychiatrist: "I killed to see how I would feel, to see if I was as cold as I thought I was, then it got moreish." Gary, Leslie Layton and Robert Moore - who provided accommodation to the killer for two nights - were also sentenced for helping in her killing spree.

The Killing Spree: Hunting Joanne Dennehy is on Channel at 10pm.
