The singer was approached on the orange carpet by a Buzzfeed reporter, who was puzzled by her accent.

When asked if she had fun, Cascada, whose real name is Natalie Horler, replied: "Yeah it was great, I had a great time."

Surprised, the journalist remarked: "I had no idea you were English. I thought you were American."

"Really? Many people think I'm German actually because I live in Germany," the star replied.

She then explained that her mother is from Romford in Essex and her father hails from Southampton.

Horler was then asked about her favourite thing about being British, to which she cheekily replied: "The banter and how laid-back we are, you know what I mean?"

The interview was posted online and fans were quick to express their shock in the comments, with one person writing: "What?? I always thought she was German, even Wikipedia thinks she’s German!"

Another echoed: "I thought she was German cos she represented Germany at Eurovision whaaaat."

A third commented: "This is actually one of the most shocking videos I've ever seen! I don't know what's real anymore like how is that accent coming out of Cascada instead of a German one."

Natalie founded the German dance act along with DJ Manian and DJ Yanou in 2004.

The group sold over 30 million albums worldwide and was named the third most successful German act of the 21st century.

Their biggest hits include hit singles Everytime We Touch, What Hurts the Most, Evacuate the Dancefloor, and Miracle.

Earlier this year it was announced that the group were gearing up for a comeback with their first album in 13 years.

In an exclusive chat, Horler told us: “It’s inspired by the times of [New York club] Studio 54.

“We’re doing a take in a more modern disco style. I’m so excited about it because it’s been a while since I’ve done a whole album. It’s nearly finished.”
