Blistering heat is set to make its way to the UK - with temperatures expected to rival those in Ibiza and reach highs of 25C.

After weeks of disappointingly cool weather, the Met Office predicts "much warmer conditions" over the next fortnight. While the upcoming weekend will see temperatures hover around 20C and peak at 24C in the south, Monday and Tuesday could be as hot as Ibiza in the southeast.

The sunny Spanish island is forecasted to reach 25C, a temperature that London and surrounding areas are expected to match as early as Monday, while the Midlands and northwest will be slightly cooler. The Met Office's outlook from June 24 to July 3 suggests it will be "predominantly fine" and large areas of the UK will be "much warmer" than in recent weeks.

The forcaster said: "At first some thicker cloud could bring some outbreaks of mostly light rain, this mainly affecting northwestern areas. However, for most, it will be dry throughout and likely to turn increasingly warm as we move into next week." There is "a chance this could persist for much of the rest of the period," the Met Office said, turning "increasingly hot".

Meteorologists say that by the end of next week, a "large range of outcomes" may see temperatures return closer to average, but added "the trend toward much warmer conditions continuing through next week is preferred." Higher temperatures means a heatwave is also on the horizon. In the UK, a heatwave is defined as a prolonged period of abnormally high temperatures, relative to the expected conditions at that given time and place.

The Met Office has set specific temperature thresholds for each county in the UK. If the daily maximum temperature meets or exceeds this value for three consecutive days, it's classified as a heatwave. These threshold values vary from 28C in London to 25C in northern England, Devon and Cornwall, Scotland, Northern Ireland and most of Wales. Chertsey in Surrey nearly reached its 28C threshold back in May, with temperatures soaring to 27.5C - marking the highest temperature of 2024 so far.

According to the Met Office, today's weather will see outbreaks of showery rain developing across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the west of England. Elsewhere, it will stay largely dry with spells of sunshine, while the weather further east will be "very warm".
