Nothing tests your mind quite like an optical illusion.

The puzzles are difficult, mystifying and often perplexing and this one is especially tough to get your head around. It's known as the Coffer Illusion, and it'll really play with your mind.

At first, the image seems to show a selection of sunken rectangular door panels. Then, after a little while, you may notice your brain's perception of the image "flips" to enable you to see 16 circles.

People have been intrigued by ambiguous shapes like this since the time of the ancient Romans. The Coffer Illusion even gives us an insight into how our brain works, as humans instinctively try to identify objects.

"Pixels" are put together to create edges and contours, shapes and objects. But, occasionally – like in the Coffer Illusion – there is no "correct" grouping.

This is because the image is naturally ambiguous. There are two groupings that make sense – the single set of horizontal lines work to either form a circle, or be the intersection between two rectangles.

Most people seem to notice the rectangles first, which is probably because we see them more often day-to-day. This means the brain is trained to see the rectangular shapes first.

In other words, you have to have pretty sharp eyes to spot the circles and, since it was shared on Reddit, the picture puzzle has got a lot of people talking.

Many people have been left amazed at how simple, yet complex, the puzzle really is. However, some admitted once you see the circles, you can never un-see them.

One person said: "It has been a while since I last saw this, it took a couple seconds to see them again." Another wrote: "I immediately thought it was a trick question and the circles would be the letter O in the text or something like that. But neat illusion!"

A third added: "Cool one! I can find them, but if I blink, they’re lost. I love it!"

Some people found them more tricky to spot though, which means it really isn't all that easy to work out. Not everyone's brain works in the same way, after all!

Another chimed in with: "This is the second time I have seen this and I still cannot see them. Ugh." A second also wrote: "It took me a while to see it but I finally got it. This is crazy!"

One more also noted: "The best thing is if you're able to see Mickey Mouse. Most people fail though."
