Rishi unfit to be gaffer

On July 4 voters will be asked to decide whether Keir Starmer or Rishi Sunak is the best person to run the country.

On the evidence of the first 24 hours of electioneering it is not even a contest. The Tories got off to a dismal start with Mr Sunak’s rain-soaked speech in Downing Street.

This was followed by the Prime Minister admitting his flagship Rwanda plan is unlikely to be in operation until after the election, while his legacy project of a smoking ban has run out of parliamentary time.

It also emerged the Tories had planted one of their councillors at a campaign event so he could ask Mr Sunak patsy questions. To cap a calamitous day, the gaffe-prone PM then asked Welsh voters if they were looking forward to the Euros without realising Wales hadn’t even qualified for them. Given how incompetent the Tories have been in office it is probably not a surprise they are just as incompetent on the campaign trail.

Civil disservice

The Cabinet Secretary also revealed he had been kept in the dark about then Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Eat Out to Help Out Scheme, which medical experts claim helped give the virus second legs.

Mr Case’s damning testimony serves as a timely reminder of how the Conservatives conducted themselves in office at a time of national emergency.
