Gabby Logan has admitted she was shocked after UEFA showed a replay of the incident that saw Barnabas Varga taken to hospital.

Hungary striker Varga was injured after a sickening collision with Scotland keeper Angus Gunn. The 29-year-old's head clashed with Gunn's arm, leaving the Hungarian sprawled on the ground.

His team-mates put him in the recovery position as the country's medical staff rushed onto the pitch. A screen was then erected to block out any sight of Vargas' treatment.

The stretcher bearers then walked onto the pitch, with Hungary's furious players rushing to hurry them up. The host broadcaster opted to play a replay of the incident, with the BBC stream then cutting away to a wide-angle view of the Stuttgart Arena.

After the match concluded, Logan offered her best wishes to Varga before explaining that the BBC were unhappy UEFA allowed a replay of the incident to be shown.

Logan said: "All of our thoughts are of course with Barnabas Varga after that sickening collision. We are updating you on his condition. At the moment we have no more. We were as shocked as you when they replayed that incident.

"There are protocols around this kind of thing after Christian Eriksen three years ago. We were very surprised that UEFA chose to play in that replay, which is why we cut away to a wide angle as soon as we could."

Varga was taken to hospital, with the Hungarian FA later confirming he is in a stable condition. A statement read: Barnabás Varga's condition is stable! The player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart! We will inform you immediately if there is any news about its status!"

After a six-minute delay, Varga was stretchered off the pitch, with the crowd at the Stuttgart Arena rising as one to applaud him off. That check was cleared though, with the game remaining goalless. Former Scotland international Pat Nevin defended Gunn for racing off his line, insisting the collision was totally accidental.

He told BBC 5 Live: "We have seen it before if a keeper comes out and he doesn't get the ball but takes a player it is a foul. I actually think Angus Gunn got some of the ball there."

Hungary won the game with a goal in the ninth minute of injury time. Roland Sallai was played in down the right wing and he pulled it back to Kevin Csoboth, who swept the ball into the bottom corner.
