Dominik Szoboszlai played a key role in helping his injured Hungary team-mate Barnabas Varga as the forward lay stricken following his collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Varga was accidentally caught in the face by the arm of Gunn as he challenged for the ball following a Szoboszlai free-kick midway through the second half.

The Ferencvaros forward appeared to suffer a reaction to being struck, and then lay motionless on the turf as Hungary's players desperately called for help.

Medics then emerged from the sidelines with a stretcher, but Hungary players were angered that it took them so long to treat Varga. Captain Szoboszlai then approached the medics and pulled their stretcher towards Varga in an attempt to hurry them up.

Szoboszlai then appeared to be in tears as screens were raised all around Varga and he was given treatment before being taken to a nearby hospital.

Hungary boss Marco Rossi confirmed that Varga had suffered facial fractures and a concussion after the match, adding that he was now thankfully "healthy" other than that, and he said his players were upset that medical staff were slow to react.

“What I heard from the players is that Barney looked unconscious," said Rossi. "Everybody was really worried about his condition, and worried that the doctors arrived a bit late. Probably they didn’t realise it was a dangerous situation.

“We can say now that Barney is not under any kind of risks. Probably he will be operated on in the coming hours because he suffered a fracture here [points to cheek], but he’s healthy. Of course if we will go through the competition he will not be any more part of the team.”

Man of the match Ronald Sallai, who assisted Kevin Csoboth for the 100th minute winner which knocked Scotland out and kept Hungary in with a chance of qualification, said: “It was a terrible moment to see him like that.

"He’ll have to go tough a minor operation, but we cross our fingers for him that he can return. Naturally it was a terrible incident. Of course we were fighting for him in the remaining minutes and this win is dedicated to him.”
