Alan Shearer cheekily said that Gary Lineker 's absence from The Rest is Football podcast was "f***ing unacceptable".
The popular show, hosted by the former strikers and ex- England defender Micah Richards, released their latest episode just hours before the Three Lions take on Slovenia in their final Euro 2024 group stage game tonight (Tuesday, June 25) at 8pm UK time.
Shearer and Richards were left hosting the episode as a tandem rather than the usual trio with Lineker not appearing on the episode. And the Newcastle legend gave his take on why the Match of the Day host was absent.
"Gary is still sleeping in his bed, he still hasn't woken up so we'll just crack on without him Micah," Shearer said before repeating his motto: "To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, and to be late is f***ing unacceptable, where are you Lineker?"
Richards then came to Lineker's defence and offered up an explanation for his supposed lateness as he explained: "He wasn't late in fairness was he, I've got an appointment, when you go on TV, you've got to look sharp, so my barber's come over and I've got a 3pm appointment!"
Shearer slams Arteta after Arsenal draw - "needs to have a word with himself"Just a minute before the pair wrapped up the episode, Lineker made a surprise appearance on the show to the cheers of his co-hosts before he was jokingly berated by Shearer who announced: "The old man has arrived, he's late, your hair's all ruffled, you've been asleep haven't you?"
The ex-England skipper explained that he'd been reading a book in the garden courtyard and had witnesses, including Frank Lampard, to account for his whereabouts. And Lineker even jokingly branded his podcast partners "t***ers" for the stick he was receiving.
Shearer and Lineker, who were international team-mates at Euro 1992, were particularly critical of England's performance in their 1-1 draw against Denmark with the latter calling the showing "s***".
The analysis sparked a response from England captain Harry Kane who said the pair have a responsibility having been England players to realise the strength of their words. "Everyone has got their opinion but the bottom line is we have not won anything as a nation for a long, long time and a lot of these players were part of that as well, so they know how tough it is," the Bayern Munich striker said.
"It is not digging anyone out. It is just the reality that they know that it is tough to play in these major tournaments and tough to play for England. We all want to win a major tournament. Being as helpful as they can and building the lads up with confidence would be a much better way of going about it."
