One of the world's most played games is currently down, with users flocking to social media and a huge spike in outages reported on an online outage reporter.

According to DownDetector, the popular video game has seen a huge surge in reported outages since around 6.15am UK time. And it has not taken long for enthusiastic gamers to make their feelings known.

Taking to Twitter, one posted: "Fortnite servers down must play Roblox with friends this is rough." Another added: "Fornite downtime?! Noooo." A third posted: "Fortnite’s been down an hr i need it back up right now."

According to DownDetector, there has been a spike in reports of an outage over the past hour amongst users across the world. Hundreds of reports have been made to the site in the past hour.

It comes as the game faces scheduled maintenance on Friday ahead of the release of Fortnite update 30.00 which is set to kick off Chapter 5 Season 3. Season 2 comes to an end on Friday, sending the Greek gods back into hiding.

Epic, which owns the game, has confirmed in the Battle Pass page in-game that its server downtime for Chapter 5 Season 3 would begin at 7am BST / 2am EDT / 11pm PDT . This means matchmaking will go down 30 minutes beforehand, allowing players to finish off their match before it goes down.

The server downtime is expected to last until around 12pm BST / 7am EDT / 4am PDT on Friday. While Fortnite typically goes down for four hours following every major update, new season launches always take longer than usual.

Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2's downtime ahead of launch lasted for 14 hours after it was extended multiple times, meaning the outage could last even longer. It's hoped any delays this time will be about an hour at most instead of 14.
