Terrifying images show a major flat fire xthat broke out in a high-rise flat in the nation's capital with 10 fire engines rushing to the scene.

As many as 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters were sent to the scene on Rymill Street in Woolwich, in the South East of London. A massive blaze was sending flames leaping into the night sky in the high rise block which looked to be at least 15 storeys high.

Firefighters initially feared the worst but in their latest statement, the London Fire Brigade said three people who were in the flat managed to escape before fire crews got there. Other residents stayed in their flats, which firefighters say they are hopeful could be unaffected.

London Fire Brigade said: "Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Rymill Street in North Woolwich.

"Part of a five-roomed flat on the 10th floor was alight. Three people left the building before the Brigade arrived, whilst others remained in their unaffected flats. They are being treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

"The Brigade was called at 2232 and the fire was under control by 2350. Fire crews from Plaistow, Barking, East Ham, Poplar and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation."

They added later: "The flat fire in north Woolwich is now under control but firefighters will remain at the scene tonight. Three people are being treated by London Ambulance crews."

On Twitter, one person wrote: "Fire in apartment block in North Woolwich, London. Looks very serious!"

The blaze appears to be in a middle-tier flat.

The fire that lit up the Woolwich skyline has now been put out by firefighters, who will remain at the scene while affected residents are being treated by ambulance crews.
