Chelsea have held talks with Enzo Maresca in the hope that he could become Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement.
The Argentine left Stamford Bridge earlier this week by mutual agreement. Chelsea have been on the hunt for his successor since then.
The Blues hierarchy compiled a comprehensive list of options in their search for their next manager - something that they have since narrowed down. And it appears that Chelsea’s search could potentially be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
According to The Sun, the West Londoners have held talks with Leicester boss Maresca regarding their vacancy. The Italian was apparently encouraged by early discussions.
Maresca - a former Man City coach under Pep Guardiola - has a £10m release clause written into his contract with current employers Leicester. The 44-year-old has two years left to run on that deal.
Premier League odds and betting tipsIt is suggested that he would be offered a longer contract than Pochettino was - albeit finer details of any move have yet to be discussed. It is further reported that the Blues are hopeful of appointing Pochettino’s long-term successor by next week - that man becoming the sixth manager in the hot seat of the Todd Boehly era.
Former midfielder Maresca masterminded Leicester’s instant return to the Premier League this term as they stormed to the Championship title. He was also previously head coach with Italian side Parma but was sacked after failing to inspire a promotion fight from Serie B.

While Chelsea have pursued talks with Maresca, he is not the only candidate in the running for the job. Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna is also being considered for a move to Stamford Bridge.
But that could potentially be difficult given further interest from Brighton and Manchester United - while Portman Road officials have not given up hope of keeping him with the offer of a new record-breaking contract.
Thomas Frank is also reported to be among the frontrunners. The Dane is tied down until 2027 but recently admitted he could be tempted to leave Brentford should an intriguing offer come his way in the immediate future.
There is no apparent favourite between the three despite talks having been pursued with Maresca. All of the trio however appear to fit into the club’s remit.
After moving Pochettino on, the Chelsea hierarchy were keen to appoint a young manager who plays attractive football. They also wanted someone who was adept at developing young players and could work in the structure already in place at Stamford Bridge.
