Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has previously expressed his admiration for Anthony Gordon - but also criticised the winger's penchant for taking a tumble.

Gordon, 23, was one of the Premier League's most deadly wide forwards last season at Newcastle but the Reds were offered the chance to sign the England international as the Magpies scramble to comply with profit and sustainability rules before June 30.

As outlined by The Mail, Liverpool do hold an interest in Gordon, who is currently away at Euro 2024. Talks broke down, though, due to Liverpool's reluctance to entertain the idea of sending Jarell Quansah in the opposite direction as part of a swap deal.

In the wake of Liverpool's interest in Gordon, Carragher's previous comments on the former Everton man have resurfaced following an incident during the Merseyside derby back in 2022.

Speaking while on commentary duty for Sky Sports, Carragher criticised Gordon for throwing himself to the ground after Naby Keita overstretched in the penalty area before suggesting that habit had made him a player people now needed "to keep an eye on".

Carragher said: "Anthony Gordon has been a revelation since Frank Lampard came in. He just jumps over Naby Keita's outstretched leg. There's been a tendency of this from Anthony Gordon, in the few games we've seen him. He's frustrated, he can't believe it... but that's crept into his game. He's somebody we've got to keep an eye on now."

Gordon won Newcastle's Player of the Year award last season after contributing 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League matches. The Magpies signed him in a £45million deal just 18 months ago.

A boyhood Liverpool fan, Gordon is happy at Newcastle but he is aware talks between the two clubs have taken place, while Paris Saint-Germain are also believed to hold an interest in him.

Liverpool are yet to make a signing under Arne Slot after the Dutchman succeeded Jurgen Klopp. The Reds are expected to bolster their squad, though, and have been linked with reinforcements in midfield.

While Liverpool have plenty of strength in depth in the wide attacking areas, Luis Diaz has been linked with a move away this summer. Barcelona are the latest team to be credited with an interest in the Colombia international, who scored eight league goals last term.
