Pep Guardiola sarcastically mocked Bernardo Silva in the tunnel at half-time of the FA Cup final after the winger seemed to insist Manchester City were wrongly denied a penalty.

The reigning Premier League champions were stunned in a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, courtesy of a superb first half Erik ten Hag's side.

Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after a miscommunication between City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and defender Josko Gvardiol, with the latter miscuing his clearance and the former sprinting out from his goal to give Garnacho the simplest of tap-ins.

And nine minutes later, United doubled their advantage after a scintillating move in City's penalty area finished off by Kobbie Mainoo. The goal marked the first men's FA Cup final in which two different teenagers scored, with Mainoo at 19 years and 36 days old becoming the youngest English goalscorer in the showpiece event since West Ham's 18-year-old John Sissons in 1964.

The lead was the least United deserved for an incisive display from Ten Hag’s side, who showed plenty of positives in transition and frustrated City's attack in a thrilling rematch from last year's final.

City comparatively toiled to show any sharpness, failing to register a shot at goal until after Garnacho’s goal. Despite the toothlessness, Silva believed City should have had a penalty given in the first half after a foul on Erling Haaland but nothing was given.

And just before the teams returned to the pitch after half-time, Guardiola mocked Silva's entreaties, saying: “Ref penalty! Are you joking?!” The Spanish coach then turned Silva back towards the tunnel as the rest of the team jogged out onto the pitch for the second-half.

And after the interval as City hunted for a way back into the match, Guardiola's side once again remonstrated with official Andy Madley after Haaland went down inside United's penalty area, but their protests fell on deaf ears.

Winger Jeremy Doku grabbed a goal back for City with three minutes of regular time remaining to place the match on a knife edge in the final minutes.

But despite the late drama, United held on to their 2-1 lead to deny City historic back-to-back league and FA Cup doubles and earn themselves a place in Europe for next season.
