Harry Maguire has attempted to wind up Leeds United supporters after they were beaten by Southampton at Wembley.
Saints won promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Leeds in the Championship play-off final. Adam Armstrong’s clinical finish in the first half was enough for Saints, who defended manfully but needed some luck when Dan James rattled the crossbar late on.
The result meant joy for Russell Martin and his players, who joined Leicester and Ipswich in moving up a division. But it was agony for Leeds, who failed to produce their best and were punished by Armstrong’s finish.
Daniel Farke’s side will have to lick their wounds and get ready to go again next season and the disappointment for the supporters won’t have been helped by Maguire’s cheeky dig. The centre-back did not play for Manchester United in their 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday due to injury, but he still celebrated the win with his team-mates.

World Cup hero wants Man Utd move as doubts over Harry Maguire's future growThe party was still going on Sunday, too, and Sheffield United fan and Red Devils player Maguire was delighted to revel in Leeds’ loss. Posting a picture on his Instagram story of Saints celebrating at Wembley, Maguire wrote: “Hope everyone having a fantastic Sunday” with a red circle and a heart emoji.
Leeds started brightly but faded and were largely kept at bay by Southampton until the nervy closing stages. The introduction of James off the bench made a difference, but Alex McCarthy made a few key saves and was fortunate to see the Welshman’s shot bounce back off his crossbar late on.
"Congratulations to Southampton. They were able to be effective today. Defended really, really well during the whole game,” Leeds boss Farke told Sky Sports. "That's football. We had more possession, more shots, more expected goals. Dominated the game in many spells but their defending was a little bit more effective than us.
"It's always important to be good in both boxes. We started the game totally on the front foot and had many good situations but in the final third, we were not that committed to the attack. On this level, when you play in a final, you have to be spot on. It's a bit written in the stars, sometimes it's not meant to be. It's a difficult day for us. A day of suffering but that's football. You have to get on with it."
Maguire now faces a race to get back to full fitness, having not featured for United since the 1-1 draw against Burnley on April 27. The centre-back is Gareth Southgate ’s first pick in defence and will want to be fit and firing before England begin their Euro 2024 against Serbia on June 16.
